Spituk Monastery, also known as Spituk Gompa, is a prominent Buddhist monastery located just 8 km from Leh in the serene village of Spituk. Established in the 11th century by Od-de, it initially belonged to the Kadampa School but was later taken over by the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism in the 15th century.
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Indus River, the monastery offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. It houses a collection of ancient Thangkas (scroll paintings), scriptures, statues, and masks used in various Buddhist rituals. The most notable feature of Spituk Monastery is the colossal statue of Goddess Kali, unveiled during the annual Gustor Festival held in January.
