Gir National Park, officially known as the Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, is the only natural habitat of the Asiatic lion in the world. Spanning an area of 1,412 square kilometers, this renowned wildlife sanctuary is located in the rugged and semi-arid forests of Gujarat’s Junagadh district. It was established in 1965 to protect the endangered Asiatic lion, whose population has steadily increased due to conservation efforts.

The park is home to over 600 Asiatic lions and boasts a rich biodiversity with species such as leopards, striped hyenas, wild boars, jackals, and a variety of deer. Gir also has over 300 species of birds, including the crested serpent eagle and Indian pitta, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

Visitors can embark on thrilling jeep safaris to spot lions in their natural habitat, explore the park’s lush deciduous forests, and visit the scenic Kamleshwar Dam, a hotspot for crocodiles and bird species. The Maldhari tribes, who coexist with the wildlife, add a cultural dimension to the park’s unique ecosystem.
