Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib, also known as Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib Amritsar, is a significant Sikh religious site located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The name “Chheharta” is derived from the Punjabi word “chheh” which means “six,” and “arta” means “penny” or “coin.” The gurudwara is associated with a historical event related to Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Guru of Sikhism.
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Arjan Dev was visited by Emperor Akbar, who offered six silver coins (chheharta) as an offering to the Guru. These coins were used to start the excavation of the sacred tank that eventually became the Amrit Sarovar (the holy pool) at the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). Gurudwara Chheharta Sahib is built at the location where this historical meeting is believed to have taken place.
The gurudwara complex includes the main shrine, a large sarovar (pond), and facilities for pilgrims. It is an important pilgrimage site for Sikhs and a place of historical and religious significance in Amritsar.
