About Mahatma Gandhi Intermediate College in Gorakhpur
Mahatma Gandhi Intermediate College, originally known as Gorakhpur High School, has a rich history dating back to its establishment on January 6, 1909. The school’s foundation can be traced back to the Gorakhpur High School Society. Late Rai Bahadur Ram Garib Lalji, a respected citizen of Gorakhpur, generously donated 11 acres of land for the school premises.
In 1913, the School Society was formally registered, and during the same year, J. Hope Simpson, the District Magistrate at the time, laid the first foundation brick of the main building. The construction of the main building was made possible through a significant donation from Late Ishwari Prasad Ji, and consequently, the building was named Ishwari Manzil in his honor. The founder and principal of the college at that time were Mr. Jadunath Chakrabarty.
In 1948, following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the school society passed a resolution, leading to significant changes. Gorakhpur High School was replaced by Mahatma Gandhi Intermediate College, while the Gorakhpur Society was replaced by the National Educational Society, Gorakhpur.
This transformation reflected the school’s commitment to honoring the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles. The renaming of the school and society further strengthened their dedication to providing quality education and upholding the values championed by the Father of the Nation. Mahatma Gandhi Intermediate College continues to play a significant role in providing education to the students of Gorakhpur and beyond, carrying forward the ideals of its namesake.
