Recognizing the importance of agricultural growth and development in ensuring the livelihood security of its population, the Government of Rajasthan gave high priority to developing agricultural education, research and extension in the state. The first agricultural college established in the state was SKN Agricultural College at Jobner. Later in 1955, Rajasthan Agricultural College was established in Udaipur. With the establishment of the first Agricultural University at Pantnagar in 1960 on the lines of the land grant universities of the United States of America, the state of Rajasthan had the distinction of being second in the establishment of agricultural universities in the country in 1962. It also accepted the model of land grant pattern. USA With the trinity of functions of education i.e. teaching, research and extension education. 

The government took the bold decision to transfer the research component to the university, which took many other states a long time. Soon the university was converted into multi-faculty in 1964. Later, it was split from Sukhadia University, Udaipur and a separate Agricultural University was formed in Bikaner in 1987. Selected affiliated colleges in Udaipur became constituent colleges of Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner.
